What causes loose skin after weight loss?
Skin laxity after weight loss happens when skin that was stretched for a long time cannot fully shrink back once fat is lost, and facial fat pads that gave support disappear. Mild to moderate facial laxity usually responds to tightening devices plus collagen-stimulating volume over a few months; large folds of excess skin need surgery.
Skin contains collagen for strength and elastin for recoil. When fat is gained, skin stretches to cover it; if this lasts years, the fibres are damaged and lose their spring. After weight loss the skin is larger than what it now covers, so it folds and sags. Age, sun damage, smoking and genetics all reduce how well it recovers.
In the face, weight loss also removes the deep fat pads that hold the cheeks up and fill the temples, so the face can look gaunt and older very quickly. This is often seen with rapid loss on GLP-1 medicines. Good results usually need two things: tightening energy to firm the skin and its support layer, and gradual volume to replace what was lost.

Possible side effects
