What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gels, most often hyaluronic acid, injected under the skin to replace lost volume and support sagging contours. The change is visible straight away, results usually last 6–18 months depending on the product and area, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed.
With age, the face loses fat, bone support and collagen. Cheeks flatten, temples hollow and folds around the nose and mouth deepen. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in the skin; as a cross-linked gel it holds water and adds structure where it is placed. Firmer gels are used deep on bone to lift and project, while softer gels smooth lines closer to the surface.
Good filler work is about placement and quantity. Small amounts in supporting areas, such as the cheekbone or temple, often improve folds further down the face more naturally than filling the fold itself. The doctor uses a fine needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area to reduce bruising and risk.

Aftercare
- Avoid pressing, massaging or sleeping on the area for a few days
- Skip saunas, hot yoga and alcohol for about 2–3 days
- Expect swelling to settle over 1–2 weeks

Possible side effects

Can fillers be removed?
