What causes deep facial folds?
Deep facial folds are the nasolabial folds (nose to mouth corners) and marionette lines (mouth corners to chin) that deepen as the mid-face loses volume and sags. They usually improve most with a combination of lifting and volume rather than filling the line alone.
The nasolabial fold is a natural crease where the cheek meets the upper lip. It deepens when the cheek fat pads shrink and slide down, ligaments loosen and bone around the eye socket and upper jaw slowly resorbs. Marionette lines form below, as the jowl area drops and the corners of the mouth turn down.
Simply filling the fold can make the face look heavy. A better approach restores support higher up: lifting devices and threads reposition sagging tissue, and volume added to the cheek or along the fold reduces the shadow. Skin quality treatments then soften the remaining crease. The right mix depends on how much is volume loss and how much is sagging.
