The short answer

What causes fine lines?

Fine lines are shallow surface creases, most often around the eyes, forehead and mouth, caused by dehydration, repeated muscle movement and early loss of collagen. They usually respond well to non-surgical care: toxin softens movement lines, and skin boosters improve hydration and thickness over 2–3 sessions.

Fine lines are different from deep wrinkles. They sit in the upper skin layers and often appear first where skin is thin and moves a lot, such as the outer eyes and forehead. Dehydration makes them look sharper, which is why they can seem worse after a flight or in dry winter air.

Two processes drive them. Repeated expressions fold the skin in the same place thousands of times a day. Meanwhile collagen and hyaluronic acid decline from the mid-twenties, faster with sun exposure and smoking, so the skin becomes thinner and creases more easily. Treatment therefore either reduces the folding or rebuilds the skin's water and collagen.

Signs these treatments can help

  • Lines at the outer eyes or forehead that show when you smile or frown
  • Crinkly fine lines under the eyes
  • Lines that look worse when skin is dry
  • You want prevention before lines deepen

When to see a specialist first

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when toxin and most injectables are postponed
  • Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, which need a specialist's advice before toxin
  • Deep, fixed folds from sagging, which suit lifting and volume treatments better
Common causes

Why fine lines appear

1

Dehydration

Dry skin creases easily and lines look sharper.

2

Repeated expressions

Smiling, squinting and frowning fold the skin in the same lines.

3

Collagen loss

Thinner skin with less collagen wrinkles sooner.

4

Sun and lifestyle

UV, smoking and poor sleep speed up skin ageing.

How we treat fine lines at our clinic

  1. Doctor consultation. We check which lines are from movement and which are from thin, dry skin.
  2. Relax movement lines. Small doses of toxin soften crow's feet and forehead lines where suitable.
  3. Rebuild skin quality. Elravie Re2O, Juvelook Skin or Rejuran improve hydration and thickness.
  4. Treat the eye area gently. Under-eye lines use eye-specific products such as Re2O Fine or Eye Rejuran.
  5. Review. Toxin settles in about 2 weeks; we review and plan booster sessions.

Aftercare

  • Stay upright and avoid rubbing for 4 hours after toxin
  • Skip saunas and heavy exercise for 24 hours
  • Moisturise well and use sunscreen daily
  • Message us if you notice asymmetry after 2 weeks

Possible side effects

Small bumps, redness and occasional bruising are common after injections. Toxin can rarely cause temporary asymmetry or a heavy brow, which settles as it wears off.
