A short or receding chin can make the jawline look soft and the nose look larger. Our physicians assess whether filler-based contouring can help, and tell you honestly when the cause is skeletal or dental and needs a surgeon or orthodontist.

The short answer

What causes a weak chin?

A weak chin is a chin that sits behind the line of the lips and forehead in profile, usually because the lower jaw bone is small or set back. Mild cases can often be improved without surgery using chin filler; marked skeletal or bite-related cases are better treated by a surgeon or orthodontist.

Chin projection is set mostly by the bone of the lower jaw (the mandible) and by how the teeth meet. If the jaw is short or rotated backwards, or there is an overbite, the chin sits further back. Soft tissue adds to the picture: a tight mentalis muscle can pull the chin into a dimpled, 'pebbly' shape, and fat under the jaw can blur the angle between chin and neck.

Ageing makes a weak chin more noticeable. Bone at the chin and jawline slowly resorbs, fat pads shrink and skin loosens, so the lower face loses definition. Non-surgical treatment works on the soft tissue layer: filler adds projection and length, toxin relaxes an overactive chin muscle, and contouring treatments sharpen the jawline so the chin reads more clearly.

Signs these treatments can help

  • The chin sits slightly behind the lower lip in profile
  • A short chin that makes the lower face look small or round
  • A dimpled or puckered chin when you speak or close your lips
  • You want a defined profile without surgery or time off

When to see a specialist first

  • A clearly set-back lower jaw or a significant overbite: see an orthodontist or a maxillofacial surgeon to discuss orthodontics, genioplasty or jaw surgery
  • Jaw pain, clicking or difficulty chewing, which needs a dental or TMJ assessment first
  • Previous chin implants or unknown fillers in the area: bring any records, and we may suggest dissolving old filler first
Common causes

Why the chin looks weak

1

Small or set-back jaw bone

A short mandible is the most common cause and is inherited.

2

Bite and dental position

An overbite or long-term mouth breathing can rotate the jaw backwards.

3

Bone and fat loss with age

The chin and jawline lose bone and volume, softening the profile.

4

Soft tissue around the chin

A strained chin muscle or fat under the jaw hides the chin's shape.

How we treat a weak chin at our clinic

  1. Profile assessment. The doctor looks at your chin, nose, lips and jawline from the front and side and checks your bite.
  2. Honest triage. If the cause is mainly skeletal or dental, we explain this and suggest seeing a surgeon or orthodontist.
  3. Plan and product. For suitable cases we choose a firm, contouring filler and agree how much projection and length to add.
  4. Treatment. After numbing cream, the doctor places filler at the bone level of the chin, sometimes with toxin for the chin muscle.
  5. Review. We check the profile with you before you leave and follow up on Instagram after you fly home.

Aftercare

  • Avoid pressing or massaging the chin for a few days
  • Skip saunas, heavy exercise and alcohol for 24–48 hours
  • Sleep on your back on the first night if you can
  • Contact us about pain, colour change or swelling that worsens

Possible side effects

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common for a few days. Rare but serious filler risks include infection and blocked blood vessels, so injection is done only by our physicians. Filler cannot move bone or change your bite.

Frequently asked questions

Can a weak chin be fixed without surgery?

Mild to moderate cases often can. Chin filler adds projection and length in one visit; it cannot change the bone or your bite, so marked retrusion is better treated surgically.

How long does chin filler last?

Firm chin fillers commonly last around 12–18 months, depending on the product, the amount and your metabolism. Many patients top up once a year.

Does chin filler hurt?

We use numbing cream, and most contouring fillers contain lidocaine. Most patients feel pressure rather than sharp pain.

Is there downtime?

Usually little. Some swelling or a small bruise is common for a few days, and most patients fly home within a day or two.

Should I see a surgeon instead?

If your jaw is clearly set back or your teeth do not meet properly, a maxillofacial surgeon or orthodontist is the right first step. We will tell you honestly at consultation.

How much does chin filler cost?

It depends on the product and amount. Send a profile photo on Instagram for a quote in English; foreigners pay the same published price.
