Thermage FLX in Korea: How It Works, Results and Who It Suits

Thermage FLX is a non-surgical radiofrequency (RF) treatment that heats the deep layers of the skin to tighten existing collagen and trigger new collagen. Most people need one session, see some firming straight away and a fuller result over 2–6 months, with no downtime. It suits early to moderate skin laxity, crepey skin and fine lines rather than heavy sagging.

Treatment type Monopolar radiofrequency skin tightening
Session time About 30–90 minutes, depending on the area and shot count
Downtime None for most people; mild redness may last a few hours
When results show Some tightening at once; main result builds over 2–6 months
How long it lasts Often around a year or more, depending on age and skin
Common areas Full face, eyes, neck and selected body areas

What is Thermage FLX?

Thermage FLX is the fourth-generation Thermage system made by Solta Medical. It uses monopolar radiofrequency energy, delivered through a single-use treatment tip, to heat the deep dermis and the fibrous layer beneath it. The tip cools and vibrates while it works, which protects the surface of the skin and makes the heat easier to tolerate.

Unlike a laser, radiofrequency is not absorbed by pigment, so it can be used on most skin tones. Unlike a facelift, nothing is cut and nothing is removed. The aim is firmer, smoother skin, not a change in facial structure.

How Thermage FLX works

  1. Heat delivery. The tip passes RF energy through the skin in a grid pattern. The FLX system measures skin contact and adjusts the energy of every pulse, so heating is more even than in older versions.
  2. Collagen contraction. Heat makes existing collagen fibres shorten and tighten. This is why many people notice a firmer feel the same day.
  3. Collagen remodelling. The controlled heat also triggers a healing response. Over the following months the skin builds new collagen, which is where most of the visible tightening comes from.

What results can you expect?

Results are gradual and natural-looking. Typical changes include a firmer jawline and cheeks, smoother texture, softer fine lines and less crepey skin around the eyes. Pores can also look smaller as the skin firms.

The degree of change depends on your starting point. Thermage FLX works best on skin that has started to loosen but still has some elasticity. It will not give the lift of surgery, and it is not designed to remove fat or deep folds on its own.

How long do results last?

Many people keep their result for around a year, and some longer. Natural ageing continues, so most patients plan a maintenance session once a year. Sun protection, not smoking and a stable weight all help results last.

Who is Thermage FLX for?

Good candidates usually have:

  • Early sagging or loss of firmness along the cheeks and jawline
  • Crepey skin or fine lines around the eyes
  • Uneven texture or enlarged-looking pores
  • A wish to tighten the skin without needles, incisions or downtime

It may not be the right first choice if you have heavy sagging that needs deeper lifting, such as focused ultrasound (Ultherapy) or a thread lift. A doctor should also check before treatment if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, are pregnant, or have an active infection in the area.

Treatment areas

  • Full face: cheeks, jawline and overall texture
  • Eyes: a dedicated eye tip tightens upper and lower eyelid skin and softens crow's feet
  • Neck: crepey skin and early horizontal lines
  • Body: areas such as the abdomen, arms or knees, decided at consultation

What happens on the treatment day

  1. Consultation. A doctor assesses skin laxity, thickness and lines, then chooses the tip and number of shots.
  2. Tip check. Genuine Thermage tips are sealed and single-use. You can ask to see the tip and its shot count before treatment starts.
  3. Comfort. Numbing cream is common. Some clinics offer sedation for larger areas.
  4. Treatment. The face is marked with a temporary grid and treated pass by pass, with extra passes where more tightening is needed.
  5. Back to your day. Make-up and normal activities are usually fine the same day.

Side effects and safety

Most people feel deep heat pulses during treatment and mild redness afterwards. Less common effects include temporary swelling, tenderness or small bumps that settle on their own. Rare risks, such as burns or changes in skin contour, are linked to incorrect settings or non-genuine tips, which is why the treating doctor's experience and genuine equipment matter.

After treatment, use gentle skincare and daily sunscreen, and avoid saunas, very hot baths and strong exfoliants or retinoids for a few days.

How to choose a Thermage clinic in Korea

  • Doctor-led treatment: ask who performs the procedure, not only who consults.
  • Genuine tips: ask to see the sealed tip and confirm the shot count before you start.
  • Clear pricing: compare prices by shot count and area, and check whether VAT is included.
  • A realistic plan: a good doctor will tell you if another treatment, or a combination, suits your skin better.

Frequently asked questions

Does Thermage FLX hurt?

Most people describe short pulses of deep heat. Numbing cream and the tip's cooling and vibration make it manageable, and settings can be adjusted during treatment.

How many sessions do I need?

One session is enough for most people, followed by yearly maintenance.

Can I combine Thermage FLX with other treatments?

Yes. It is often combined with Ultherapy for deeper lifting, or with skin boosters for hydration and texture. Your doctor will plan the order and timing.

Is Thermage FLX safe for darker skin tones?

Radiofrequency does not target pigment, so it is generally suitable for a wide range of skin tones when performed with correct settings.
