What causes puffy eyes?
Puffy eyes are swelling around the eyes caused mostly by fluid build-up from salt, alcohol, poor sleep or allergies, and in persistent cases by lax skin or fat pushing forward. Fluid puffiness improves with lifestyle changes and medical care, while firming treatments help puffiness from laxity.
The tissue around the eyes is loose and thin, so fluid collects there easily, especially overnight while you lie flat. Salty food, alcohol, crying, hormonal changes, hay fever and lack of sleep all make it worse. This kind of puffiness is usually worst in the morning and improves through the day.
Puffiness that stays all day is different. It is often caused by loose skin and weaker muscle tone around the eye, or by fat bulging behind the lower lid. These structural causes do not respond to cold spoons or eye creams, but firming the skin and thickening it with boosters can make the area look smoother and more rested.

How we treat puffy eyes at our clinic
- Doctor consultation. We ask when the puffiness is worst and examine the eye area to separate fluid, laxity and fat.
- Medical first. If allergy or a medical cause is likely, we advise seeing the right doctor before cosmetic care.

Possible side effects

How do I know if my puffy eyes are fluid or fat?

Can treatment get rid of morning puffiness?
Not reliably. Morning puffiness is mostly fluid and responds to sleep, less salt and alcohol, and allergy treatment. Firming treatments help the structural part.
