The short answer

What causes rough skin?

Rough skin feels dry, bumpy or sandpapery because dead skin cells build up and the skin barrier loses moisture. It usually improves with gentle exfoliation, deep hydration and barrier-repairing boosters, while persistent roughness with redness or scaling should be checked by a doctor.

The outer layer of skin normally sheds dead cells in a steady cycle. When the skin is dehydrated, sun-damaged or ageing, this turnover slows and cells pile up, so the surface feels rough and looks dull. Cold, dry air, long hot showers, harsh cleansers and over-exfoliating all strip the protective lipids that keep skin smooth.

Roughness is different from uneven texture, which comes from scars or pores. Rough skin is mostly a surface and barrier problem, so it often responds quickly to cleansing facials, light peels and hydration. Repair boosters such as Rejuran and hydrating injections then help the skin hold moisture and stay smooth between visits.

Signs these treatments can help

  • Skin that feels sandpapery or flaky to the touch
  • Dullness and make-up that catches on dry patches
  • Roughness that worsens in winter or after flights
  • Small closed bumps from clogged pores

When to see a specialist first

  • Red, scaly or itchy patches that do not settle, which may be eczema, psoriasis or seborrhoeic dermatitis: see a dermatologist
  • Rough, gritty spots on sun-exposed skin in older adults, which can be actinic keratoses and should be checked
  • Skin that is already raw from over-exfoliating: let it recover first
Causes

What makes skin feel rough

1

Dead cell build-up

Slow turnover leaves a thick, dull surface layer.

2

Dehydration

A weak barrier loses water and feels coarse.

3

Environment

Cold, dry air, flights and hot showers strip lipids.

4

Sun damage

UV thickens the outer layer over time.

How we treat rough skin at our clinic

  1. Doctor consultation. We examine your skin for dryness, clogged pores and signs of a skin condition.
  2. Cleansing and exfoliation. Heal fusion PRO or a light chemical peel removes built-up dead cells.
  3. Hydration. A hydrating booster such as Hilowave or Elravie Re2O restores moisture.
  4. Repair. Rejuran supports the barrier and helps skin recover.
  5. Home care. We suggest a simple routine and follow up on Instagram.

Aftercare

  • Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser
  • Moisturise twice a day, especially after washing
  • Apply daily sunscreen
  • Avoid scrubs and strong acids for a few days

Possible side effects

Light peels can cause mild redness and flaking for a day or two. Boosters may leave small bumps and slight redness that usually settle within 1–3 days. Our doctors adjust strength for sensitive skin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to fix rough skin?

A cleansing facial such as Heal fusion PRO or a light peel smooths the surface within a day. Hydrating and repair boosters help keep it smooth.

How much does treatment cost?

Zero-Bruise Rejuran 2cc is ₩300,000 and Hilowave 2cc is ₩450,000, VAT excluded. Facials and peels are priced after consultation.

Is rough skin the same as uneven texture?

Not quite. Rough skin is a surface and barrier issue; uneven texture often involves scars or pores. See uneven skin texture.

Is there downtime?

Little to none. Peels may cause brief flaking; boosters may leave small bumps for a day or two.

Can I treat rough skin on a short trip?

Yes. Facials and boosters fit easily into a short stay, and many patients book one before flying home.

When should I see a dermatologist?

If roughness comes with persistent redness, scaling, itching or rough spots that do not heal, see a dermatologist first.
