The short answer

What causes uneven skin tone?

Uneven skin tone is patchy colour across the face, from brown spots, melasma, dark marks after acne or areas of redness. It is usually improved, not cured, with gentle laser toning, brightening care and strict sun protection over several sessions.

Skin colour comes from melanin made by pigment cells. Sun exposure, hormones and inflammation all switch these cells on, but not evenly. The result can be freckles and sun spots, larger blotchy patches of melasma on the cheeks and upper lip, or brown marks left behind after spots, burns or scratches heal (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Redness from visible vessels and a dull surface can also make tone look uneven. Because each cause behaves differently, especially melasma, which can worsen with strong heat or aggressive treatment, we identify the pigment type first. Treatment then combines gentle laser toning, brightening care, peels and daily sunscreen, with patience over several sessions.

Signs these treatments can help

  • Brown spots or freckles from sun exposure
  • Blotchy patches on the cheeks or upper lip
  • Dark marks that stay after acne heals
  • A face that looks patchy without make-up

When to see a specialist first

  • A spot that is new, changing, growing, itching or bleeding, which needs a dermatologist to rule out skin cancer before any laser
  • White patches losing colour (for example vitiligo), which need a medical diagnosis
  • Pigment that appeared with a new medicine or hormonal change, which you should discuss with your doctor
Common causes

Why skin tone becomes uneven

1

Sun spots and freckles

UV exposure triggers small, defined brown spots.

2

Melasma

Hormones and heat cause blotchy patches on the cheeks and lip.

3

Post-inflammatory marks

Acne, burns or irritation leave flat brown marks.

4

Redness and dullness

Visible vessels and a rough surface make tone look patchy.

Your visit

How we treat uneven skin tone at our clinic

  1. Pigment diagnosis. The doctor examines the spots and patches to identify the type of pigment.
  2. Safety check. Any suspicious spot is referred for a dermatology check before treatment.
  3. Laser toning. Gentle laser settings break down pigment over a series of sessions.
  4. Brightening support. Peels, brightening treatments or glutathione may be added where suitable.
  5. Protect and maintain. Daily sunscreen and maintenance sessions help keep tone even.

Aftercare

  • Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and reapply outdoors
  • Avoid saunas and strong heat, which can worsen melasma
  • Use gentle skincare and avoid harsh scrubs
  • Do not pick at spots or marks

Possible side effects

Laser toning usually causes mild redness for a few hours. Some spots darken briefly before fading. Pigment can return with sun exposure or hormones, so maintenance is common.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions will I need?

Defined sun spots may fade after 1–3 sessions. Melasma and widespread uneven tone usually need a longer series of gentle toning sessions.

Is laser safe for melasma?

Gentle toning settings are commonly used, but strong heat can worsen melasma, so the doctor chooses settings carefully and adds sun protection.

Is there downtime?

Laser toning usually has none beyond brief redness. Spot treatments can leave small dark crusts for about a week.

Can I treat pigment on a short trip?

You can start, but most plans need several sessions. We can plan a first session and home care, then continue on your next visit.

How much does it cost?

Laser and brightening treatments are quoted after consultation. Foreigners pay the same published price as Korean patients.
